Because it works, quickly.
In traditional psychotherapy, one analyzes the "why's and wherefore's" and while light is shed onto the client's behavior or thoughts and beliefs and an understanding of that behavior/thought/belief is achieved, it doesn't always change the behavior, thought or belief.
In hypnotherapy, the client's subconscious is being reprogrammed. Think of the subconscious as a computer, it simply puts out what has been programmed into it. Starting from birth until around 8 or 9 years of age, a child is in a state of hypnosis, absorbing and associating information from parents, friends and teachers. For example, if a child was always rewarded for being a "good girl or boy" by being given a piece of candy, the child associates "being good" with sugar. Years later the adult wants to give up sugar, but finds it very difficult. This is because the subconscious associates "sugar" with "being good/feeling good".
Hypnosis simply bypasses the critical mind and goes directly to the subconscious to reprogram that old belief of "sugar = good". The client and hypnotherapist discuss what new belief the client wishes to have and then the reprogramming begins! The client is completely aware of their surroundings and never "lose control". One can come out of hypnosis at any time. It is perfectly safe and natural, in fact, everyone goes through a state of hypnosis at least once a day, right before you go to sleep, you pass through what is called the "hypnoidal phase". This is when you are most suggestible and this is the state that the hypnotherapist brings their clients to.
